Frequently asked questions

What is a FIRE number?

The money that can pay your yearly expenses for life. It is your yearly expenses ÷ the share you take out each year: ₹9 lakh ÷ 3.5% = ₹2.57 crore.

How much should I take out each year in India?

Many planners use 3–3.5% for early retirement in India, because inflation is higher and retirement can last 40 years or more. At 3% you would need ₹3 crore.

Why use returns above inflation?

So every number stays in today’s rupees. If you expect 11% returns and 6% inflation, enter about 5%.

How much faster if I save more?

Saving ₹9 lakh a year instead of ₹6 lakh, you reach the number at 47 instead of 52.
