Frequently asked questions
How much loan can I get on my gold?
RBI limits a gold loan to 85% of the gold’s value for loans up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% for loans up to ₹5 lakh and 75% above that. 40 grams of 22K gold at ₹12,000 a gram for 24K is worth ₹4,39,680, so you can borrow up to ₹3,51,744.
EMI or pay at the end (bullet) — which is cheaper?
EMI. You repay part of the loan every month, so less interest builds up. On ₹3,00,000 at 11% for 12 months, EMIs cost ₹18,174 in interest; paying everything at the end costs ₹34,716.
What happens if the gold price falls?
The lender keeps the loan within the limit for the whole loan. If the price falls too much, you must repay part of the loan or pledge more gold. In the example, the price can fall about 15% before that happens.
Which gold is accepted?
Gold jewellery and coins. Lenders do not lend against gold bars, gold ETFs or gold mutual fund units. They value only the gold content, not stones or making charges.
